Frequently asked questions
- How does SunnyTracker calculate sunrise and sunset? With astronomical algorithms (after the NOAA Solar Calculator) for the exact coordinates of each city. Sunrise and sunset are the moments the upper edge of the sun touches the horizon, including atmospheric refraction. The times are accurate to about a minute; mountains and buildings on the horizon are not taken into account.
- What are the golden hour and the blue hour? The golden hour is the time shortly after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is between 4° below and 6° above the horizon – the light is warm, soft and casts long shadows. The blue hour follows sunset (and precedes sunrise) when the sun is 4–6° below the horizon and the sky turns deep blue.
- Why does the length of the day change over the year? Because the Earth's axis is tilted by about 23.4°. Around the equinoxes the day length changes fastest – in Central Europe by up to four minutes a day – and around the solstices it barely changes at all.
- Why is the earliest sunset not on the shortest day? Because of the equation of time: solar noon shifts over the year. In the Northern Hemisphere the earliest sunset therefore comes around mid-December and the latest sunrise only in early January.
- Are the times shown in local time, including daylight saving time? Yes. All times are shown in the local time of the selected city, with daylight saving time applied automatically.
- Is SunnyTracker free? Yes, all times, charts and tools are free and need no registration. You can also install SunnyTracker as an app on your home screen.
